Poetry prescriptions offer words of advice and inspiration.

Deborah Alma is a poetry pharmacist who harnesses the healing power of words to help people feel better. Her poetry prescriptions bring comfort and calm to those in need.

From broken hearts to Christmas spirit, there is a prescription for every mood! Each tiny glass bottle contains capsules of unique poems that soothe the soul.

Deborah believes that gift of carefully chosen words can go a long way in improving people’s mental health.

“I was working with people with dementia actually, using poetry to assist communication and saw how poetry could change someone’s mood. People just need some help to find the poem that they will respond to,” said Deborah.

Woman catches and treats over 30 stray cats.

Emilie Rackovan spotted a stray cat near her home in Milwaukee. Then, another one appeared. And another one. The cats kept coming.

She realized there were about 30 stray cats nearby who needed care.

Emilie was determined to help them all! She and her friend spent the next few days trapping the cats and getting them food and necessary medical care, so that they can get adopted into loving homes.

“Any of the ones that were friendly or showed signs of being friendly we put into foster care and then quite a few have been adopted,” said Emilie.

Emilie is the director of Thrifted Kittens Animal Rescue, a nonprofit that saves vulnerable animals in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

A woman is creating reading opportunities for children who live in remote areas.

Horiuchi Yoshimi fell in love with books at a very early age.

Her loved ones would read books aloud to her, which opened up her world to new possibilities.

Horiuchi is now on a mission to promote the joy of reading to children in rural communities, who otherwise have limited access to books.

She set up the Bookworm Foundation to improve access to books for children in remote areas in northern Thailand. She hopes to help children nurture the habit of daily reading, cultivate curiosity, and achieve their full potential.

“Many Thais tell me that books are uninteresting. I hope to show them that reading is enjoyable and meaningful,” said Horiuchi.

A community of music-loving students is helping seniors experience the joy of sound.

Pianist Grace Sun is the founder of Melodies for Remedies, an organization that gives free concerts and music therapy sessions to those living in assisted living facilities.

More than 100 musicians have joined her mission of using performing arts to provide joy and healing for seniors.

It all started during the pandemic when Grace hosted virtual concerts to cheer up her grandparents and other seniors. Eventually, she founded the organization to harness the power of music to serve the larger community.

“Music from my experience is a universal language and I think it deserves to be shared around the world and to whoever needs it,” said Grace.
